Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

The UNEP – Office for Operations internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Update the UNEP training database as and when different training(s) take place in 2013. Collect and scan certificates for filing for all mandatory courses, MDP, LDP and Performance Management and Development for FROs and SROs, Selection and Interviewing Skill workshop and for all centrally coordinated programmes offered through UNON.


  • Drive H. Worksheet password is 'OFO&CS': CSS-Dept-Training
  • Collect attendance sheets from SDTU and from OAH.
  • Update the UNEP training database as and when different training(s) take place in 2013.
  • Liaise with UNEP-HQ focal points and individual staff members and follow-up in preparation for HR Scorecard on 1) the 5-day minimum training requirement for every staff member in UNEP, and 2) mandatory training requirement compliance for 2012.
  • Be familiar with the Learning issues by Division and draft responses to staff queries
  • Contact all division focal points to follow up all staff in their division! Remind staff to comply.
  • Write to all staff who have not complied to send certificates after completion of training
  • Assist HR Section and Training Programme Officer with any other activities regarding UNEP specific training programmes under development such as organization of Administration Management Meeting (AMM), Induction Program and Staff Wellbeing program.
  • Create Umoja training database On H drive under CSS-Dept-Training: Information on various training folder; Name: Umoja worksheet
  • Update and keep records of staff members who attend training
  • Update IPSAS attendance logs (CBT's & ILT's) and do analysis of training requirements.
  • The updated IPSAS work sheet is saved on H drive under CSS-Dept-Training: on training statistics folder: Name 'IPSAS' –CBT & ILT trained
  • Attend HR-Training and for Training Focal Points meetings, take and draft minutes and after review by the Training Program Officer, circulate to the group.

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • MBA student or studies in IT, HR or Business studies preferred

Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. 

Languages
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
